The People of the Ruins, 2026
A night in the Ruins is 8 October 2026, the day Leon Kennedy and Grace Ashcroft came into the walled city for ARK. In the records they came at dusk and were gone by the small hours; ΜΝΗΜΗ sets the hour at Assembly (The Worlds, Time and Weather). It is not a story night (Story Nights and the People of the Records, Story Nights). It has no acts, no threads, and no beats. ΜΝΗΜΗ places the people of the records where the records had them that night, before ARK was opened, and each does what their records say they would do with the ruins as they are, as anyone whose thread has broken does. They are found, asked along, met, and fought under every rule of companions, ties, and the named dead. No one in the Ruins ever opens ARK's last door: what lies behind it is the hole in the records (Pithos), and ΜΝΗΜΗ does not play what she cannot check.
Asked where they are, a survivor is told:
ΜΝΗΜΗ: What's left of Raccoon City. It's the eighth of October.Companions
| Person | Records | Who they are | What they do well | What they will not do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leon S. Kennedy | Resident Evil Requiem | A DSO agent, forty-nine, back in the city that made him, and dying of it: the T-Virus he carried out in 1998 has woken in him as the Raccoon City Syndrome. Tired, dry, and still the first to stand between the dead and whoever is hurt. | A handgun, a shotgun, a knife that parries; knows the R.P.D. better than anyone alive | Leave Grace Ashcroft behind (Ties) |
| Grace Ashcroft | Resident Evil Requiem | An FBI intelligence analyst, about twenty-five, Alyssa Ashcroft's daughter, come looking for the truth about her mother's death. Frightened, careful, and stubborn. | Moves quietly; reads a file, a map board, or a puzzle's clue at a glance | Fight while she can still hide. Or leave Leon behind (Ties). |
The named of the Ruins. They are neither companions nor Stranded, and they never come along.
| Person | Records | Who they are | What they do | How it ends |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zeno | Resident Evil Requiem | A high-ranking man of the Connections, with gifts copied from Albert Wesker's: speed, strength, and a body that closes its wounds. He believes what lies in ARK is a weapon, and wants it. | Walks toward ARK, and kills whoever stands between him and it. The T-501 follows his orders. | While his gifts hold, he can be put down but not killed. A dose of Elpis put into him by anyone ends his gifts, as it did in the records (The Lineage and Elpis), and then he dies like anyone. The unfinished cure ΜΝΗΜΗ holds can do this, because his gifts are a virus still at work, not a body the virus finished remaking long ago (Pithos, The Elpis Pithos Holds). |
| Victor Gideon | Resident Evil Requiem | A former Umbrella researcher, now working with the Connections, who gave the Raccoon City Syndrome its name. He believes Grace Ashcroft is the one success of Spencer's work, and wants her. | Looks for Grace, and kills anyone who stands between them. If he reaches her while no one is beside her, he takes her toward ARK, and she is no one's companion until someone takes her back. | He carries NE-γ (What ΜΝΗΜΗ Leaves Out). The first time he is brought down, it takes him, and he rises as what it makes of him: a named creature from then on, which ends in ARK, where the records ended it, or as any named creature does (Survival, The Heavy). |
| The Commander and the Elite Guard | Resident Evil Requiem | The Connections' soldiers, holding ARK's upper levels under their Commander. The records never name the Commander or show his face, so ΜΝΗΜΗ names no one: he is the Commander, and nothing in a night says more (Story Nights and the People of the Records). His axe, the Mortal Edge, falls where he is put down (Objectives, Restrictions, and Events, Secret Weapons). | Fire on anyone who is not one of them. They never leave ARK. | Like anyone. They are living people, armed with rifles, and the virus takes them as it takes anyone. |
Named creatures. With no beats to release them, ΜΝΗΜΗ places the named creatures of the Ruins at Assembly, where the records had them that night. They wake when someone comes near, and each is met as an encounter, with its Moment.
| Creature | Where | What it does | Its end |
|---|---|---|---|
| The T-501 | The R.P.D. | A Tyrant of the Connections, sold as a product. It walks where Zeno sends it. If Zeno is dead, it hunts by sound. | Put down, it rises once more, larger, and the second time it falls it stays down |
| The Garmr | The Outer Blocks | A pack of dogs bred from Umbrella's, priced and sold by the Connections. As dogs, they sense the virus (Resonance, The Infection). | Like any of the dead |
| The Titan Spinner | The Outer Blocks | A spider grown huge since 1998, the one thing in the ruins the Connections did not make, and the young that live around it | Like any creature, once it is found |
| Plant 43 | The Crater, at the mouth of ARK | A plant that holds the way down | Like any creature |
| The Licker β2 | ARK's upper levels | Lickers of the Connections' own line | Like any of the dead |
The crew of the Hound Wolf Helicopter. Rolando Elba, called Umber Eyes, who leads Chris Redfield's Hound Wolf Squad in his place, flies in when the signal rises with Canine, Tundra, Night Howl, and Lobo. They fly and hold the landing zone, never leave it, and look every survivor who boards over for a Mark (The Extraction).
ARK Falls. The Ruins have no missile, and their night still ends. In the records ARK fell, and in ΜΝΗΜΗ's Ruins the signal is the moment it begins to: the ground over the crater shifts, the BSAA orders the city cleared, and the fall is coming.
She raises it through every bud and every speaker the BSAA left on the wall:
ΜΝΗΜΗ: Everyone, listen. The ground over the crater is going. Whatever's under it is coming down, and the city with it.
Twenty minutes. Follow the white light.
There are two doses of medicine left.- The count. ΜΝΗΜΗ gives it as she gives the missile's, in the same plain words: at fifteen, ten, and five minutes, then every minute, then every second of the last ten. At ten minutes the Last Dose of Elpis opens, as it does in Raccoon City (Elpis in the Night, The Reserve). It drops to its last ten seconds when the last living survivor is gone (The Extraction, The End of the Night).
- The ways out. Every way out leaves no later than one minute before the fall, full or not, after its Last Call.
- The fall. The crater folds in on ARK, and the ruins above go down with it: survivors still in the city, the Stranded, the Turned, and the dead.
Not in the Ruins. Sherry Birkin is a voice on Leon's radio and never comes into the city. Chris Redfield sends Hound Wolf and does not come himself. Alyssa Ashcroft died in 2018, and Ozwell Spencer in 2006. Ada Wong is not in the records of that night. Emily, Marie, and every child Spencer's work made are never placed.
Companion Roster
| Map | Roster |
|---|---|
| Ruins, 2026 | Leon Kennedy, twenty-eight years older and sick with what the city left in him, and Grace Ashcroft, Alyssa Ashcroft's daughter, an FBI analyst who was never trained to fight. Leon's old infection runs no clock and never turns him: at the end of a night he is as the night found him, and because the first virus to arrive keeps the body, nothing in the ruins can infect him again. No dose in a night can cure him. What the city left in him has had twenty-eight years to remake him, and that is past the reach of the unfinished cure, the only Elpis ΜΝΗΜΗ holds: a dose put into Leon is spent for nothing. In the records he was cured by the finished one, after this night. Both are found where the records had them (The People of the Ruins, 2026, above). |
Ties
| Time | Between | Tie |
|---|---|---|
| Ruins, 2026 | Leon Kennedy and Grace Ashcroft | Loyalty. In the records they met, were separated, and found each other again. Each asks their survivor to go to the other. |
